Oshiomhole demands Obaseki’s probe as Okpebholo gets INEC certificate

Former Edo State governor, Adams Oshiomhole has urged for an investigation into Governor Godwin Obaseki as his term nears its end in approximately two months.

Oshiomhole urged as Senator Monday Okpebholo, the victor of the recent Edo State governorship election, accepted his Certificate of Return from the Independent National Electoral Commission alongside his running mate, Dennis Idahosa.

Okpebholo is poised to take over from Obaseki when his second term concludes on November 11.

Oshiomhole called on the World Bank to investigate how Obaseki spent the $75m from the Edo Basic Education Sector Transformation project.

Oshiomhole expressed happiness as the All Progressives Congress regained control of Edo State following the defeat of Obaseki's candidate, Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party, by Okpebholo of the APC in last Saturday's gubernatorial election.

After being asked to respond to Oshiomhole's statement, the Edo State Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, Chris Nehikhare, mentioned that the government will respond at a later time.

Okpebholo and Idahosa were presented with their certificates of return by INEC's National Commissioner overseeing Edo State, Rhoda Gumus, during a ceremony in Abuja.

Following a closely fought Edo governorship election, Okpebholo, representing the APC, emerged victorious with 291,667 votes, defeating Asue Ighodalo of the PDP who received 247,274 votes, while Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party came in third with 22,761 votes.

Okpebholo and Idahosa were awarded their certificates on Thursday despite the PDP's demands to annul the election results, claiming the process was tampered with.

In his speech after receiving his certificate, the Edo governor-elect, Okpebholo, stated his willingness to serve the people of Edo State and mentioned his readiness to collaborate with opposition parties, provided they have beneficial and agreeable ideas for the people.

Okpebholo asked Ighodalo and Akpata to be patient with the results of the election last Saturday and assured them he would work for the people of Edo.
