Some rogue policemen have been stopped from scaling through the gates to access the strong room of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission(RSIEC)
Apparently, their intention is to cart away sensitive Electoral materials meant for the conduct of Saturday 5th October local government election in the State.
The deployment was said to have been ordered by the Inspector-General of Police.
However, the evil plots of the rogue policemen and Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations) were botched.
This is because some vigilant security officials raised an alarm.
Also, some principal officers of the Commission and relevant government authorities who had worked late into the night immediately sent words across to inform the Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara of the development.
The Governor immediately led a team of government officials, lawmakers from the National Assembly and State House of Assembly including top political stakeholders, and other leaders to RSIEC.
Governor Fubara addressed newsmen in front of RSIEC Office on Aba Road in Port Harcourt on the night breaking into Friday.
This was after he had an encounter with the rogue policemen.
Governor Fubara said no matter the plans were behind the ugly attempt by the Nigerian Police, led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations), it has been foiled.
The Governor emphasised that those rogue policemen wanted to take over the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) at 1 AM on Friday, 4th October, 2024.
Governor Fubara condemned the conduct of those policemen who were unarguably on illegal duty.
He wondered why the IGP was taking his friendship with some Abuja-based politicians too far.
Governor Fubara informed that because such plans were being hatched, they surreptitiously had withdrawn policemen already deployed to protect the facility.
To achieve their plans, Governor Fubara said they stationed a detachment of officers from a neighbouring State to make the attempt to break into RSIEC, an that is unacceptable.
Governor Fubara reminded the IGP that the local government election was the internal affairs of States, and advised him to allow the federation unit conduct its affairs without vested political interest interference.
